The Tatamagouche area is blessed with natural beauty and the resources
for agricultural abundance. These qualities are the basis for family farming
which continues to thrive in Nova Scotia. In such a small area we have ready-access
to products that range from wool to fresh vegetables; from locally raised chickens
to maple products; from blueberries to eggs; and not to mention the bounty from the
sea. This array brings a sense of richness to our area and so the question is,
“With so much to choose from, why not buy locally from our neighbours?”
When we choose to buy local products we are choosing quality. The food we buy
locally has not traveled vast distances so it is fresher. This freshness directly
relates to a higher nutrient level in the food, which imparts better health to the
consumer. Buying local foods also contributes financially to our local economy.
Local farmers who sell directly to consumers get full retail price for their food.
In turn, the money made on farm circulates within the community supporting and ensuring
that local businesses remain vibrant. Another benefit that is often unseen is that we
get to know our neighbours and this fosters a greater sense of community. When we buy
locally everyone wins!
